Harvey Matusow was at the centre of the McCarthyite red scare: an ex-commie who turned FBI informer, Matusow spent four years mouthing off to anti-red committees, before putting the cat among the stoolpigeons by revealing almost all of his testimony to have been a pack of lies. But what drove Matusow to his extremes? Was it money? Was it fear? Or was it a simple lust for fame – fame of any kind and at any cost?
